A few words on poetry
A moment: Levitating on the streets of Nizwa | 21.10.22
Salam curious souls!
Welcome to my very first newsletter on the goleh project. As this nasty flue virus is making its rounds in Muscat & found its way to me I thought it’s time to write this. Also there is a little something special I’m announcing at the end of this email so stick around!
I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately & wanting to re-watch old classic films and the first one on my list was the dead poets society. The legendary Robin Williams as Mr. Keating giving us an inspiring performance & great life lessons.
We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.
I especially liked how his character trashed the fictional Prichard Scale that measures the greatness of a poem according to it’s perfection and importance. How could you measure the depth of the human emotion by a scale? while language can be beautifully complex in its design where you have masterpieces written, similar to any form of art, it is subjective to the eyes of the beholder. I believe poetry is for the people.
The other day my hairdresser tells me stories of poetry open mics in New York where she jokes about them making no sense to her as they share abstract words she didn’t understand, while I giggle at her impressions, I understand it is not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok.
Recognizing your own voice, your own thoughts away from what was passed down to you and what’s expected of you would be the last thought I take away from the film.
So What will your life’s verse be?
A Duqm poetry night!
Our upcoming poetry night
Ending the year on a magical note, I’ve been planning the next poetry & spoken word event and I’m so excited to share that I will host it as part of the AMAD season in Duqm! We are going on tour!
This is a 5-6 hours drive from Muscat so anyone who’s interested and confident about making the trip, you would make it for the full experience. There is art, music, entertainment & glamping! Check “discover duqum” account on instagram to know more and keep an eye out for buying tickets & accommodation. They are announcing the details gradually.
The poetry night will be on the 2nd of December - at 11 pm. If you are interested to join please reserve your spot . I will be publishing it on the goleh project’s instagram in a few days.
Until then, stay curious!
Your hummingbird,
Maria
